Chapter XI · Śloka 24
नभःस्पृशं दीप्तमनेकवर्णं
व्यात्ताननं दीप्तविशालनेत्रम् ।
दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा
धृतिं न विन्दामि शमं च विष्णो ॥

दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा
धृतिं न विन्दामि शमं च विष्णो ॥
nabhaḥ-spṛśaṁ dīptam aneka-varṇaṁ
vyāttānanaṁ dīpta-viśāla-netram ।
dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṁ pravyathitāntarātmā
dhṛtiṁ na vindāmi śamaṁ ca viṣṇo ॥
vyāttānanaṁ dīpta-viśāla-netram ।
dṛṣṭvā hi tvāṁ pravyathitāntarātmā
dhṛtiṁ na vindāmi śamaṁ ca viṣṇo ॥
Having seen You touching the sky, blazing, of many colors, with wide-open mouths and vast flaming eyes — my inner self is terrified, I find no steadiness nor peace, O Viṣṇu.
Arjuna's personal disruption is total: dhṛti (steadiness of will) and śama (inner calm) — the two pillars of yogic composure — have both abandoned him. The vision of the infinite has temporarily undone the very equanimity the Gītā aims to cultivate.
