Chapter XVII · Śloka 10
Śrī Kṛṣṇa uvāca
यातयामं गतरसं पूति पर्युषितं च यत् |
उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं भोजनं तामसप्रियम् ||
उच्छिष्टमपि चामेध्यं भोजनं तामसप्रियम् ||
yāta-yāmaṃ gata-rasaṃ pūti paryuṣitaṃ ca yat |
ucchiṣṭam api cāmedhyaṃ bhojanaṃ tāmasa-priyam ||
ucchiṣṭam api cāmedhyaṃ bhojanaṃ tāmasa-priyam ||
Food that is stale, tasteless, putrid, decomposed, left over, and impure is dear to those in tamas.
Tāmasika food has already given whatever life it contained — it is the food of inertia, of things past their time. What was once alive has turned. The person drawn to such food is already inclined toward heaviness, insensibility, and dullness.
