Chapter XVIII · Śloka 39
यदग्रे चानुबन्धे च सुखं मोहनमात्मनः |
निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ||
निद्रालस्यप्रमादोत्थं तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ||
yad agre cānubandhe ca sukhaṃ mohanam ātmanaḥ |
nidrā-lasya-pramādotthaṃ tat tāmasam udāhṛtam ||
nidrā-lasya-pramādotthaṃ tat tāmasam udāhṛtam ||
That happiness which deludes the self from beginning to end — arising from sleep, sloth, and negligence — that is declared to be tāmasic.
Tāmasic pleasure does not even offer the rājasic consolation of an enjoyable beginning: it is deluding throughout. The pleasures of excessive sleep, inertia, and heedlessness leave one dimmer at the end than at the start.
