Chapter XVIII · Śloka 9
कार्यमित्येव यत्कर्म नियतं क्रियतेऽर्जुन ।
सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलं चैव स त्यागः सात्त्विको मतः ॥
सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलं चैव स त्यागः सात्त्विको मतः ॥
kāryam ity eva yat karma niyataṃ kriyate 'rjuna |
saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalaṃ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ ||
saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalaṃ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ ||
That tyāga is considered sāttvika in which prescribed action is performed simply because it ought to be done, abandoning attachment and fruit.
Sāttvika renunciation is action performed from pure duty, free from clinging to the process or its reward. This is the ideal that the Gītā consistently upholds as liberating action.
