बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् ।
मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥
मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥
bṛhat-sāma tathā sāmnāṃ gāyatrī chandasām aham |
māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo'ham ṛtūnāṃ kusumākaraḥ ||
māsānāṃ mārgaśīrṣo'ham ṛtūnāṃ kusumākaraḥ ||
Among the Sāma hymns I am the Bṛhat-Sāma; among metres I am the Gāyatrī; among months I am Mārgaśīrṣa (November–December); and among seasons I am spring (kusumākara), the flower-bearer.
The Bṛhat-Sāma is the grandest of all Vedic chants, and the Gāyatrī — the most sacred of all metres — is itself revered as a divinity. Mārgaśīrṣa was regarded in ancient times as the first month of the year, and spring is the season of flowering and renewal.
