Chapter XIV · Śloka 24
समदुःखसुखः स्वस्थः समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः ।
तुल्यप्रियाप्रियो धीरस्तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः ॥
तुल्यप्रियाप्रियो धीरस्तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः ॥
sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ svasthaḥ sama-loṣṭāśma-kāñcanaḥ |
tulya-priyāpriyo dhīras tulya-nindātma-saṃstutiḥ ||
tulya-priyāpriyo dhīras tulya-nindātma-saṃstutiḥ ||
He who is the same in pain and pleasure, who is self-abiding, to whom a clod, a stone, and gold are alike, to whom the pleasant and the unpleasant are equal, the steady one who regards blame and praise as the same —
Equanimity is not numbness but a stable groundedness in the Self; the sage treats fortune and misfortune, honor and dishonor with the same serene impartiality.
