Chapter XVI · Śloka 18
अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः ।
मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः ॥
मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः ॥
ahaṅkāraṃ balaṃ darpaṃ kāmaṃ krodhaṃ ca saṃśritāḥ |
mām ātma-para-deheṣu pradviṣanto 'bhyasūyakāḥ ||
mām ātma-para-deheṣu pradviṣanto 'bhyasūyakāḥ ||
Taking refuge in egotism, force, arrogance, desire, and anger, these envious people hate Me dwelling in their own bodies and in those of others.
The profundity of this verse lies in its identification of where Kṛṣṇa is hated: in one's own body and in others'. To mistreat others or abuse one's own body is, spiritually, to hate the divine indweller. Hatred of the ātman in other beings is the ultimate expression of ahaṅkāra.
