Chapter XII · Śloka 18
समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः ।
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः ॥

samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāpamānayoḥ |
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅga-vivarjitaḥ ||
śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅga-vivarjitaḥ ||
One who is equal towards enemy and friend, equal in honour and dishonour, equal in cold and heat, in pleasure and pain, and free from attachment —
Three spheres of equanimity are listed: social (enemy/friend), personal regard (honour/dishonour), and physical sensation (cold/heat, pleasure/pain). Together with freedom from attachment, they compose the Stoic backbone of bhakti.
