In a clean place one should establish a firm seat for oneself — neither too high nor too low — covered with kuśa grass, a deer skin, and cloth, one upon the other.
The detailed specification of the meditation seat grounds the teaching in practical reality. Cleanliness of place, stability of posture, appropriate height — these are not mere ritual conventions but the material conditions that allow the body to become still enough for the deeper work to begin.
