Chapter VI · Śloka 32
आत्मौपम्येन सर्वत्र समं पश्यति योऽर्जुन ।
सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं स योगी परमो मतः ॥
सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं स योगी परमो मतः ॥
ātmaupamyena sarvatra
samaṃ paśyati yo 'rjuna |
sukhaṃ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṃ
sa yogī paramo mataḥ ||
samaṃ paśyati yo 'rjuna |
sukhaṃ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṃ
sa yogī paramo mataḥ ||
O Arjuna, that yogi is considered supreme who measures by analogy with himself — seeing pleasure and pain as the same in all beings.
Empathy elevated to its highest form becomes the standard of yogic excellence: knowing one's own joy and sorrow, the perfected yogi extends that same sensitivity to every creature without discrimination. Such equanimity is not indifference but all-inclusive compassion.
